Executive Summary: The Non-Negotiable Zero-Server Promise

Unlike commercial PDF platforms that upload user documents to remote cloud storage (such as Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, or proprietary microservices) to perform manipulation, SlowPDF does not maintain, operate, or connect to any backend document processing server.

Our Core Architectural Invariant:

When you drag, drop, select, or edit a PDF document on SlowPDF, that file is loaded strictly into your local device's memory (RAM) via your web browser's sandboxed environment. At no point in time does any byte, token, text string, metadata tag, or image payload travel across the network to our servers.

This design decision was intentional. We believe privacy should not be a promise written in legal boilerplate; it should be mathematically and architecturally enforced by the software design itself.

Complete Technical Architecture: In-Browser Execution

To provide robust document tools—such as PDF page extraction, lossless compression, visual whiteout, split/merge operations, and OCR—SlowPDF executes modern, open-source JavaScript and WebAssembly (Wasm) engines compiled directly for client-side environments.

HTML5 File & FileReader API

When you choose a file from your hard drive, the browser issues an in-memory ArrayBuffer pointer. This binary buffer resides exclusively in your computer's RAM and is manipulated locally without network socket transfer.

WebAssembly & Web Workers

Complex cryptographic and parsing operations (e.g. PDF token deserialization, OCR character recognition, and image resampling) run in isolated background threads (Web Workers) on your local CPU cores.

HTML5 Canvas Rasterization

Visual redaction, whiteout masking, and color tinting leverage hardware-accelerated 2D Canvas contexts rendered directly onto your physical display via your GPU without saving intermediate cache frames to remote endpoints.

Local Blob URL Generation

When your edited PDF is ready for saving, the browser compiles the modified binary chunks into a local blob:https://... URI. The download starts instantly from your own RAM to your Downloads folder.

You can verify this at any second by opening your browser's Developer Tools (F12 or Cmd+Option+I), switching to the Network tab, enabling offline mode, and running any tool on SlowPDF. Every tool will continue functioning seamlessly without an active internet connection.

Zero Storage, Zero Databases & Instant RAM Eviction

SlowPDF operates with zero server-side databases. We do not maintain MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, DynamoDB, Firebase, or Redis instances for storing user documents, user accounts, or transaction records.

✓
No Cloud Buckets: We possess zero Amazon S3 buckets, zero Google Cloud Storage containers, and zero Azure Blob Storage accounts. There is literally no physical remote hard drive where your files could be written or accidentally retained.
✓
Instant RAM Eviction: As soon as you close your browser tab, refresh the page, or click "Reset", your operating system's garbage collector instantly frees and overwrites the memory space allocated to your document.
✓
Zero Temporary Server Files: Many cloud services upload your PDF to a /tmp directory and run a cron script to delete it after 1 hour. On SlowPDF, your file is never written to any server /tmp directory for even 1 nanosecond.

Realistic Device Security: Honest Truth vs Misleading Claims

Many websites mislead users with dishonest marketing slogans like "100% Unhackable", "Military Grade Encryption", or "Guaranteed Impenetrable Security". As honest software engineers, we refuse to make false promises.

The Real-World Security Boundary:

Because SlowPDF never receives your documents, your files are completely immune to remote server leaks, cloud database breaches, subpoena disclosures directed at our infrastructure, or rogue backend employee snooping.

However, total security on any computer or phone remains a shared responsibility. Your documents can still be vulnerable if your local device has malware, keyloggers, rogue browser extensions with excessive permissions, screen recorders, or unpatched operating system vulnerabilities.

Best Practices for Handling Sensitive Documents:

  • Keep your web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Brave) updated to the latest stable release.
  • Audit your installed browser extensions and remove untrusted or unverified add-ons.
  • For extremely sensitive financial, medical, or classified files, disconnect your Wi-Fi or enable Airplane Mode before processing your document—SlowPDF will continue to work perfectly offline.
  • Always maintain an original backup copy of your file on your computer prior to running any manipulation.
5

Telemetry & Analytics: Anonymous Traffic Measurement Only

To ensure SlowPDF loads quickly across diverse global networks and to identify browser rendering bugs, we use standard, privacy-conscious performance analytics (such as Google Analytics 4 with IP anonymization enabled and Microsoft Clarity).

What We Measure (Anonymous System Metrics Only):

  • Aggregated page view counts and general referrer sources (e.g. Google search, direct visit).
  • Browser type and viewport resolution (e.g. mobile vs desktop) to optimize CSS layouts.
  • Aggregate UI interactions (e.g. whether a user clicked "Dark Mode" or toggled the category filter).
  • JavaScript runtime error exceptions to debug broken browser builds.

What We NEVER Track or Collect:

  • NO file names or original file paths.
  • NO file contents, document text, OCR results, or images.
  • NO document metadata (author names, creation timestamps, signatures, or page titles).
  • NO personal identifiable information (PII) such as email addresses, real names, or phone numbers.
6

Ad-Blockers, Privacy Shields & Offline Use

Unlike commercial platforms that force you to disable your ad-blocker or whitelist their domain to use their tools, SlowPDF works seamlessly with all privacy tools, including:

uBlock Origin
Brave Shields
Pi-hole
Privacy Badger

If your ad-blocker or browser blocks Google Analytics or Clarity scripts, SlowPDF will not show nagging warning modals, disable feature buttons, or degrade document quality. The local PDF processing engine is completely detached from analytics logic.

7

Third-Party CDNs & Subresource Integrity

To serve static application assets (such as Google Fonts, open-source pdf-lib, and pdf.js worker bundles) with global low latency, we rely on public Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) including Cloudflare cdnjs and Google Fonts.

When your browser fetches these static JavaScript libraries, your IP address is transmitted to the CDN solely to download the immutable code file. None of your document bytes are ever sent to these CDNs.

8

Compliance & Regulatory Alignment

Because SlowPDF does not collect, store, or process personal data on remote servers, our posture with major global privacy frameworks is built directly into our code:

GDPR (European Union): Under Article 4 of the GDPR, processing personal data requires lawful basis and data protection safeguards. Since SlowPDF does not receive, collect, or store personal document data on any server, SlowPDF is not a Data Controller or Data Processor of your document contents.

CCPA / CPRA (California): We do not sell, rent, or share personal information or document data with data brokers or marketing third parties.

FERPA & Student Privacy: SlowPDF is widely used by students and educational institutions because academic assignments, research papers, and grade transcripts are never uploaded to commercial cloud servers.

HIPAA & Confidential Records: Healthcare providers, legal professionals, and financial analysts frequently process confidential records locally on SlowPDF specifically to avoid cloud data exposure.

9

Children's Online Privacy Protection (COPPA)

SlowPDF is completely safe for students and minors under the age of 13. We do not require account registration, do not collect names or birthdates, do not run behavioural tracking, and do not store children's school assignments or personal documents.

10

Open Verification & Architectural Transparency

We invite security researchers, educators, and curious users to inspect SlowPDF's runtime behavior at any moment:

  1. Press F12 or right-click anywhere and select Inspect.
  2. Switch to the Network tab.
  3. Drag any PDF document into any tool on SlowPDF.
  4. Observe that zero POST, PUT, or upload requests are generated. All file processing occurs inside local memory buffers.
